So the "Elysian Fields" gig at New York's The Stone on October 26 is actually a special event:
Jennifer Charles does Pastorini
10:00 PM, Thursday, October 26,
The Stone, Ave C at 2nd St., New York
Cost: $10
Jennifer Charles sings Ed Pastorini. Special World Premier!!! Jennifer
Charles (the velvet-throated poet behind Elysian Fields) teams up with
underground genius Ed Pastorini (of 101 Crustaceans un-fame,
incidentally Charles' favorite living song composer). Charles will
sing many of her favorite Pastorini songs, accompanied by the man
himself on piano and guitar. Should be an unbelievable night of rusty
lugers and velvet bullets.
Jennifer was invited to The Stone this month by special guest curator
Mike Patton.

The French web site Blogothèque has posted two amazing videos of Elysian Fields recorded by Vincent Moon. The first features Jennifer Charles, Oren Bloedow, and Thomas Bartlett playing "Jezebel" in Jennifer and Oren's Brooklyn apartment. The second shows Jennifer and Oren playing "We're in Love" on their roof overlooking Manhattan.
(You can play the videos using the embedded Flash player on the page. You can also download high quality QuickTime versions of the videos at the bottom of the page. Scroll down to where it says "Télécharger en grand format" and click on the song titles to download a zip archive of the QuickTime movie. Note that you'll need QuickTime installed to view them.)
For those who don't read French, here's a quick English translation of the lead: "Doveman [Thomas Bartlett] has said that to understand Elysian Fields, you have to see them in their apartment. Thus Vincent Moon went to film Jennifer Charles at home. She sang in French in her "salon surchargé" [basically "living room full of stuff"] and whispered words of love on the rooftops of Brooklyn."
Reminder: La Mar Enfortuna (Oren Bloedow, Jennifer Charles, Robert DePietro, Brahim Fribgane, Ted Reichman, and Doug Weiselman) will be playing tonight in New York at the Merkin Concert Hall.

On Sept 28 Oren will "play a song" at the CBGB Gallery in New York to commemorate the closing of the important music club.

Oren has sent out a notice encouraging everyone to check out Noche Flamenco, a flamenco group from Madrid. Here's what he has to say:
"Please do yourselves a huge favor and buy tickets to Noche Flamenca, the fantastic flamenco dance and music troupe from Madrid, who are playing all this month and the next at Theater 80 St. Marks. I have been four times already and have never been less than profoundly moved, shedding tears of joy on each occasion."
"The singing, guitar playing, and dancing are all of the finest caliber imaginable, but even more than that, there is simply such incredible intimacy in their shows, and such an abundance of human spirit on the stage. They love to play Theater 80 where is no amplification, the guitars and voices penetrate acoustically, sometimes amidst a storm of clapping and deadly accurate rapid fire stamping of boots, and you can see every drop of sweat flying off in the spotlights."
"I know you all get a lot of mail, and I wouldn't bother you with this if i didn't think this was a life-changing experience."
You can read more about Noche Flamenco at their official site. There was also an article about them in the New York Times. You can also buy tickets to their New York appearance at Theater 80.

Here's a roundup of pictures from the recent European gigs. Manu took pictures in Valence. The Silver Club in Switzerland posted photos on its site. And Mélanie sent some photos to blackacres.net to post.
Some of those pictures are amazing. Thanks, everybody!

Just a heads-up that I've been updating setlists and pictures on the Gigography for the current tour. (Check out the 28 April setlist with "Fright Night" not a song you hear very often, if ever.) If you have any additional information to contribute, please send it to chris @ the very obvious address (hint: it's the title of an EF song).

Elysian Fields guitarist Oren Bloedow now has his own MySpace page where you can hear three new songs from his upcoming solo album. The new songs are "Hawking" (about the physicist), "I'm Your Creation" (which EF has played live a few times), and "Your Childish Dreams." The songs are really cool, not EF-ish exactly but somehow sure to appeal to fans of the band. Definitely check them out, and watch for a CD from Oren soon!
And don't forget that Elysian Fields will be playing tonight in New York at Tonic. The band will consist of Oren, Jennifer Charles, and Thomas Bartlett. And if you can't make that gig, Oren will be playing at Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on 21 March.

On Friday, 17 March, Elysian Fields will be playing at Tonic in New York.
On Sunday, 19 March, Doveman (aka Thomas Bartlett, Elysian Fields' keyboardist) will be opening for Glenn Hansard of The Frames at Pianos. (It's unclear to me whether Oren will be playing along with Doveman that night?)
On Tuesday, 21 March, Oren will be playing at Pete's Candy Store in New York.
On Thursday, 23 March, Oren will be playing with Chocolate Genius at Tonic in New York.
On Friday, 31 March, Oren will be playing with Chocolate Genius in Amiens, France.

Happy New Year, Elysian Fields and fans!
Looking back over the last year, it's been a really exciting time to be a fan of Elysian Fields. The band released an incredible new album, Bum Raps and Love Taps. They played a number of gigs in Europe to support the CD, and they also surprised us with a Mar Enfortuna gig in October.
What's next on the agenda? Obviously the band will be looking to release Bum Raps and Love Taps in America. Hopefully they'll also make an official release of the lyrics for the album. (C'mon, Jennifer and Oren! Why don't you post those lyrics on your site?) And if they find an American distributor for Bum Raps and Love Taps, maybe they'll even tour a bit here in the States? I know there are fans in far-flung areas like Austin and Portland who are clamoring to see the band live.
(And rightly so. Elysian Fields is amazing live. I wish they'd consider releasing a live CD or, failing that, an "unofficial" soundboard recording via their web site.)
What else can we expect this year? Until the band releases Bum Raps and Love Taps here, it would probably be too much to expect another new album. On the other hand, they have been playing a number of new songs in concert Jezebel, Someone, I'm Your Creation, and another song or two. Those may well be the seeds of some amazing new disk to come at some point in the future.
At any rate, keep an eye on blackacres.net and on Elysian Fields' MySpace site for the latest news. Happy new year!
